AUGUST 12, 1989 – The Rolling Stones played a secret club gig at Toad’s Place on York Street in New Haven, Connecticut, much to the delight of about 700 patrons. Joey Ramone and Daryl Hall were two of the very few to get past Toad’s velvet rope. After the Rolling Stones and their entourage set up in the town at the Wykeham Rise School in Washington, Connecticut in July for rehearsals for their forthcoming “Steel Wheels” tour, residents formed a “Roll the Stones Out of Town” action group, saying it was like the army had moved in and taken over, with security guards stopping locals and asking them what they were doing there. The band stayed in town for six weeks during which time they made the surprise visit to Toad’s Place.
