“For the past 30 years, we would open up the very first concert planning meeting each year by saying: ‘Is this the year for Dylan?’ And we were always told: ‘No. He’s way too big for a tiny venue like yours,’” said Bartell, the president of Bartell Hotels, which owns eight San Diego hotels.
“So, over the years, we got used to hearing, ‘No.’ But that didn’t stop us from asking. It was a dream that wouldn’t die. And, this year, the dream came true. We just got the confirmation a few days ago. And we’ve been told this is by far the smallest venue Dylan is playing on this tour.”

On his current tour, Dylan has been focusing much of his attention on gems written by Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Cy Coleman, Johnny Mercer and other masters of the Great American Songbook that were previously recorded by Frank Sinatra.
Those songs are featured on Dylan’s two most recent albums, thus year’s “Fallen Angels” and last year’s “Shadows in the Night.” At his June 9 Berkeley concert, seven of the 20 selections Dylan performed were from those two albums, 10 were from the albums he’s release since 1997’s landmark “Time Out of Mind,” and just three from his game-changing 1960s catalog.
He had almost exactly the same ratio of songs at his subsequent two concerts.
