Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as “rock and roll” in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It developed into a range of different styles in the mid-1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Rock music’s roots lie in a combination of African-American genres such as blues, boogie-woogie, jump blues, jazz, and gospel music, together with Western swing and country music. It is characterized by a strong rhythm section of bass guitar and drums, often with the addition of electric guitar and sometimes keyboards, and a strong emphasis on melody and often incorporates elements of the blues, folk, and pop.
