We are the guest of the Netflix miniseries I Am Not Okay with This, which we are not sure yet whether he is a superhero or an anti-hero, and Sydney has not discovered his special powers. We are here with the 1st season review of the series.
I Am Not Okay with This, written by American comic book writer Charles Forsman, became Netflix’s new youth series as a production of the same name. The series is produced by Dan Cohen and Shawn Levy, the producers of Stranger Things and the Duffer Brothers. Jonathan Entwistle, the creator of The End of F *** ing World, immediately directs and writes the series.
We are welcoming one of the examples that Netflix users are used to now, showing originality in some parts. I Am Not Okay with This, who joined us in 2020, offers nothing but disaster to its audience so far, just like 2020 itself. The series, which we watched its first season, consists of 7 episodes, which we can include in youth, drama, fantasy, mystery and many other genres. The episode lengths are about 20 minutes in one sitting and you can be horrified.
The Terrifying Emergence of Telekinetic Power
We begin the story by getting to know the ordinary life of Sydney (we will call it Syd later in the article). She told herself, “I am a 17-year-old boring white girl. I’m not a special person, ”we understand from the scene shown in the TV trailer where Syd walks down a street at night with her blood-covered body, she is very special and far from boring. Syd’s adventure includes his best friend Dina and my favorite character, Stanley Barber (Stan), who Syd’s later met.
Syd is a young man who, after his suicidal father, wants to live an ordinary life with a lot of questions in his mind like all other teenagers. Syd and her small family have moved to a small town in Pennsylvania and are trying to get used to life there. According to Syd, it is not a nice part of Pennsylvania, it is a lousy place with corn, cabbage, and lousy. Syd, who regularly meets the psychologist, lives with her mother and her lovely brother, who take full responsibility for the house. When he meets a side of his introverted life that no one should see, his life becomes far from ordinary.
We watch a teenager who is torn between finding a reason for Syd and her father’s sudden suicide, trying to make sense of her uncontrolled power and continuing her routine life. The elements that combine the series with other teen dramas are that Syd is not popular at school at all, her best girlfriend is very beautiful and popular, and those who see the two side by side cannot see anything in common. While trying to deal with the problems other teens are dealing with, such as finding herself, socializing, exploring sexuality, Syd meets a force she can’t handle: telekinetic superpowers!
Telekinesis, which is the ability to activate substances with the power of thought, may be the dream of many of us. We like to cook from our seat or turn off the remote switch after we go to bed alone in the room. If Syd’s telekinetic powers were of use, such a series would not exist. I Am Not Okay with This presents a Syd, who, as the name suggests, is not good with these powers. Syd’s powers are fed by negativity. After the tragic loss of his father, he begins to live with sudden tantrums. Unless he can express himself, and cannot react to situations that bore him, Syd, who grows in anger, begins to cause some damage to the person he is angry with, the place he is angry with. Unfortunately, it fails to stop it before things get out of hand.
The atmosphere of the series contains many details that capture the current and carry traces from the past. We can say that the old cars are catching up with the present by touching on issues such as LGBT individuals and feminism.
Will I Am Not Okay With This Season 2? When?
In the last episode of the IANOWT series, it ends with a huge curiosity bomb when you have the full taste of the series. Throughout all the episodes, “I wonder if?” makes you ask the question. Here we will probably understand that answer when season 2 comes. No explanation has yet been received from Netflix about the second season of the series. However, in the second season of the series, there are rumors that the character of Stanley will not be. We eagerly await.
Finally, I have a strong feeling that the season 2 episodes of the series will meet with us in 2021. But Netflix has yet to make a statement supporting my feelings. What we know about the second season is limited to the fact that new names can be added to the cast and Stan will not be in the cast of the second season.
