JANUARY 12, 1969 – Led Zeppelin’s debut album was released in the US (March 31st in the UK). Recorded at Olympic Studios in Barnes, London, the album took only about 36 hours of studio time to complete at a cost of just £1,782, most of the tracks being recorded ‘live’ in the studio with very few overdubs. The LP stayed on the Billboard chart for 73 weeks and also held a 79-week run on the UK charts, creating an entirely new interpretation of the rock and roll genre and establishing the band’s unique fusion of blues and rock. Within two months of its release the album had reached Billboard’s top ten, peaking at #10, and earned its first US gold certification on July 22nd. By 1975 it had grossed $7,000,000.
