JANUARY 8, 2016 – David Bowie’s final album “Blackstar” (stylized as “★”) was released on Bowie’s 69th birthday and two days before his death on January 10th. Within ten days, it reached #1 on the US Billboard album charts, his only LP to reach the top spot. The album was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, and also topped charts in a number of countries, and was the artist’s tenth #1 album in the UK. The album was largely recorded in secret between in New York City at both the Magic Shop and Human Worldwide Studios with Bowie’s longtime co-producer Tony Visconti and a group of local jazz musicians. Visconti described the album as Bowie’s intended swan song and a “parting gift” for his fans before his death.
