Cream performed their last US concerts in Providence, Rhode Island on their farewell tour, prior to their breakup. That US tour, only their second, started on October 4 in Oakland, California. On their final US gig, the opening act was Terry Reid. The 6:30 show quickly sold out, so a second show was scheduled for 9:30 by the promotor, but a city noise curfew forced it to stop early. By the time Cream hit the stage they only had 30 minutes. It was an unsatisfactory but, ironically fitting, end to this exploitative tour. Some of the audience members were further disappointed by the 3 of them having a cream pie fight to celebrate the end of the band.
In 2012, Clapton opened up to Uncut magazine about his feelings during that last American tour. “I was calling home to Robert Stigwood, our manager, and saying, ‘Get me out of here – these guys are crazy. I don’t know what’s going on and I’ve had enough.’ He’d always say to give it one more week. That was bearable as long as there was no visible alternative. But when something came along that showed another way, that was it for me.”
