OCTOBER 29, 1965 – The Who released “My Generation” in the UK. Recorded on October 13th at Pye studios in London, England, it reached #2 on the UK chart, held back from the #1 position by The Seekers “The Carnival Is Over.” It became The Who’s highest charting single in their home country and #74 in America. Roger Daltrey would later say that he stuttered the lyrics to try to fit them to the music. The BBC initially refused to play the song because they feared that it might offend people who stutter, but it reversed its decision after the song became more popular. The song has been said to have “encapsulated the angst of being a teenager,” and has been characterized as a “nod to the mod counterculture.”
