Michael Hutchence was born on January 22, 1960, in Sydney, Australia to Kelland Hutchence and Patricia Hutchence. The family moved to Brisbane and his brother Rhett was born there. The family later moved to Hong Kong, where his father worked in a trading company. He was educated at the ‘King George V School’ in Ho Man Tin, Hong Kong, and his first interests were swimming and poetry.In 1972, his family returned to Sydney and settled in Belrose, where he enrolled at “Davidson High”. It was at this school that he came in contact with Andrew Farris, who later became a founding member of the group ‘INXS’.Andrew was a member of the group called ‘Doctor Dolphin’ and asked Michael to join the group. They were joined by Geoff Kennelly and Garry Beers, who attended ‘Forest High’, and soon these two boys also attended ‘Davidson High’.The guys made music and thought about starting a band. In 1977, the Farriss brothers Tim, Andrew and Jon formed the band Michael, Kirk Pengilly and Garry Beers.
