October 7 1982 – Former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page was given a 12 month conditional discharge

James Patrick “Jimmy” Page was born on January 9, 1944, in Heston, Middlesex, England. His father, James Patrick Page, was a personnel manager at a plastic-coatings plant and his mother, Patricia Elizabeth Gaffikin, was a doctor’s secretary. In 1952, the family moved to Epsom in Surrey, where Page attended Epsom County Pound Lane Primary School.

Page’s interest in music began at an early age. He found his first guitar, a Spanish guitar, when he was about 12 years old and started to take lessons. By the time he was 14, he had already appeared on Huw Wheldon’s All Your Own talent quest program in a skiffle quartet, one performance of which aired on BBC1 in 1957.

In his early teens, Page was listening to and learning from records by the likes of guitarist Les Paul and jazz artists like saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. His interest in rock and roll music began after hearing Elvis Presley’s “Baby Let’s Play House.”

Page attended Danetree Secondary School in Ewell, Surrey, until he left school to pursue music. He gained experience as a studio session guitarist in London and toured with various bands, including the Yardbirds, before he formed Led Zeppelin, one of the most successful, innovative, and influential rock groups in history.

Mr Brooks said: “Jimmy grew up in a semi-detached house in Miles Road Epsom to become one of rock’s most gifted and distinctive guitarists.

“He went to Epsom County Primary School and on to Danetree Road Secondary School, leaving for Sutton Art School.

“He is still remembered for the folk masses he played for at St Barnabas Church and the youth club dances at Christchurch Hall in the early 1960s.”
