Kehlani lost her father at a young age. Since her mother was in prison, her aunt took custody of her and she lived with her aunt for a while.

She joined the group ‘Poplyfe’ as a soloist at the age of 14. Age 16 (2011), participating in America’s Got Talent with her band. 4th place.
While attending Oakland School of the Arts, Kehlani’s dream was to become a dancer; but she decided to go after her music as a result of her injury. After high school, she dropped out and went to Los Angeles to join a rap group.
