SEPTEMBER 16, 1993 – A fire destroyed the California home of singer Grace Slick (who was not at home) when sparks from welders’ torches ignited a grass fire as they were repairing a neighboring fire road gate and adding a “Danger: Fire Area” sign at the end of Del Casa Road. “It was sad and very numbing,” said Marin County Fire Department spokesman Chris Collins, who walked through the wreckage with her. “It’s a sad moment for her.”About 60 firefighters contained the fire in about an hour, but not before it had been pushed by high winds and burned 12 acres in upscale Mill Valley and raced through the hilltop home before it was contained. Two firefighters were later fired and two others suspended over charges they took memorabilia from the burned-out home. Authorities said two trainee firefighters were fired, and two veterans were placed on administrative leave, but were not formerly charged with any crimes. The four were blamed for removing a burned shotgun and old Jefferson Airplane backstage passes.
