1- The Squid Game Screenplay Was Written in 2009
Squid Game‘s director Hwang Dong-hyuk completed the screenplay of the TV show in 2009. But most of the producers didn’t want to start this project 12 years ago because it was “weird” and “savage”. The producers think that the sector isn’t ready for such a TV show. This is why Squid Game was forced to wait for a suitable environment for years.
2- What Do The Colours of The Clothes Mean In The TV Show?
When I say Squid Game, you will probably think about people with a green and pink outfit. Because the TV show is only based on these 2 colours. The contesters are wearing green suits. Since the TV show is about group games, this colour represents the high school uniforms of the Korean youth. The director Hwang wanted to use dark pink to easily attract attention to this carefully selected colour. This is the reason for having green and dark pink throughout the TV show.
3- The symbols on the masks come from ants
We can see all soldiers in the TV show inside the same dark pink overall. We can’t understand their ranks at first sight. But when we see the symbols on their masks, we can see that the Circle represents the workers, the Triangle represents the soldiers and the Square represents the directors. The director Hwang selected this system after analysing the ant colonies. The ants don’t show a difference from the outside and they are the same as the TV show. But there is a perfect ranking system between them. Although the symbols are not Square, Circle and Triangle, the ants have certain marks and odours. These can only be seen by the other ants in the colony. Just like in the TV show. Moreover, the shape of the masks in the TV show represents the ant’s mouth. If you look carefully, the mask is one piece. A line divides it into two on the bottom and 2 sides are distinguished like 2 large teeth.
4- In fact, all games are shown on the wall!
One of the biggest mysteries in the TV show is what will the next game be like. But actually, all of the games are there on the walls of the huge hall the contesters are staying from the start. They can’t see it because there are too many beds. When you look at the first few minutes of episode 8, you can see all the pictures and all the games on the wall when there are only 3 individuals and 3 beds are left.
5- There are 456 people in the first game
There was a game where everybody needed to stay still without moving and the first mover died? Actually, there are 456 actors in that game. That scene was shot with 456 real people without special effects or models. And this means serious work for today.
6- Giant real sets instead of special effects!
Today, we are used to seeing a lot of special effects in movies and TV shows. But the director Hwang wanted to change this and he used minimum CGI which is the special effects. Of course, they needed to have giant sets when they don’t have special effects. The lead actor Lee Jung-Jae was surprised by the size of the set when he arrived on the first day. Such details made this TV show one of the best Korean TV shows.
7- We could have realised there is something wrong with the old man from the first episode.
Actually, the old man’s key role in the screenplay was shown in the first episode. First, this old man is called Oh Il-nam and it means “number one man“. His collar number is 001… Did this show he entered the content as the first individual? Or he is at the top and he is the number one man? What about the camera not detecting him in the first episode? In the game in which the mover died, the camera turns to the old man but does not detect him in green colour. This scene actually showed us there is something wrong with the old man…
8- Gi-Hun’s number 456 signifies honesty and unity in some cultures.
9- The red hair of Gi-Hun in the last episode means he has self-confidence and he is different from society because he won the game.
10- The front of the hotel where the homeless man froze in the last episode is the place where the main character Gi-Hun is picked up with the minivan in the first episode.
11-The giant doll in the red light-green light game is real. The doll is exhibited in a museum in Incheon but an arm is missing.
12- The stairs are inspired by the Relativity work of Dutch painter M.C. Escher.
