OCTOBER 28, 2014 – The Allman Brothers Band played their final performance at the Beacon Theater in New York City. The 3½-hour show dug deep into the Southern Rock band’s roots and branched off so often into its legendary “… At Fillmore East” album to give the mostly Baby Boomer-age crowd a flashback to 1971. No guest musicians sat in on or through any of the final concerts, as had often been the case over the years. Instead of routing into rarely played songs, the set list was tailored to please and came almost entirely from the band’s first five records, the band’s hits and standards.
The band had been running for 45 years, and in their last version for 15 years, with guitarists Trucks and Haynes. They played an engagement nearly every year since 1989 at the Beacon Theater and annually performed more than 230 concerts. But both its guitarists had announced in January that they intended to leave the group by the end of 2014.The individual members of the Allmans will almost certainly continue to play in some form and combinations. There may even be reunions. As for the guitarists, Derek’s R&B juggernaut with his wife Susan Tedeschi, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, had recently played a transcendent Beacon run in September, and Haynes’ group Gov’t Mule made a traditional holiday stop at the Beacon on December 30th and 31st.
