27th January 1980 – Bob Dylan plays the first of three nights at Uptown Theater, Kansas City, Missouri
Following on from Dylan’s 78′ World Tour and his conversion to Christianity Dylan went into the Studio and recorded “Slow Train Coming” his first fully Christian album, released on August 20th 1979, Dylan premiered his new material to his fans live via Saturday Night Live. Then 2 weeks later started a 14 day residency at Fox Warfield Theatre, San Francisco followed by a further 12 US dates.This concert in 1980 saw Dylan 14 shows into his return from his Christmas break. The second leg lasted just 24 dates before Dylan was back in the studio recording “Saved” Dylan’s second Christian album.
After that a further third leg of the gospel tour took place with another 29 dates in April and May. By the time Saved is on sale and Dylan is back on the road (back at the Warfield) in November, Dylan’s non christian songs are starting to reappear in his set-lists.
Tonight show had the second incarnation of the gospel tour band on hand to support Dylan, consisiting of Fred Tackett (guitar), Spooner Oldham (keyboards), Tim Drummond (bass), Terry Young (keyboards), Jim Keltner (drums), Carolyn Dennis, Regina Peeples, Regina Havis and Mona Lisa Young (background vocals).
