SEPTEMBER 13, 1969 – The “Rock And Roll Revival” festival was held at the Varsity Stadium 277 Bloor Street West on the University of Toronto campus in Toronto, Canada. The 12-hour event featured live sets from over a dozen acts including Whiskey Howl, Bo Diddley, Chicago, Junior Walker and the All Stars, Tony Joe White, Alice Cooper, Chuck Berry, Cat Mother and the All Night News Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, Little Richard, Doug Kershaw, The Doors, and the unannounced appearance of John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band.
Kim Fowley was the Master of Ceremonies, and Screaming Lord Sutch was later added to the bill, as was the Toronto area band Flapping. Prior to the addition of Flapping, the only local band on the bill was Whiskey Howl.
Lennon & Ono’s band included guitarist Eric Clapton, bassist Klaus Voormann, drummer Alan White, as well as their assistants, Anthony Fawcett, Terry Doran, and Jill and Dan Richter, who were put together so late that they had to rehearse on the plane from England, and were so named because of the flexible “plastic” nature of the members. Their performance, which included “Give Peace A Chance,” “Yer Blues,” and John’s forthcoming single “Cold Turkey,” would later be released as “Live Peace In Toronto 1969.”
