DECEMBER 15, 2001 – Joe Walsh received an honorary doctorate of music from Kent State University. Joseph Fidler Walsh was born on November 20, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas, but in his youth he lived in Columbus, Ohio and then later New York City and Montclair, New Jersey. He attended college at Ohio’s Kent State University, where he first played with several local Ohio-based bands before joining the James Gang in 1968 and reaching a national audience. University spokesman Jim Szatkowski said Walsh’s wife contacted the university about the honorary degree, saying Walsh regretted that he never graduated. Walsh received an honorary doctor of music in recognition of his musical achievement, as well as his involvement in environmental and humanitarian causes.
