System Restore is a built-in Windows feature that allows you to revert your computer’s system files, registry keys, and settings back to an earlier point in time—called a “restore point.” This is particularly useful for fixing issues caused by a recent software installation, driver update, or system change without affecting your personal files like documents, pictures, or emails.
Here is a comprehensive guide on how to perform a System Restore on a Windows 10 PC, covering the steps for a working system and for when your PC won’t boot.
1️⃣ Method 1: Performing System Restore When Windows is Working
This is the standard and easiest way to use System Restore when you can still log into your Windows desktop.
Step 1: Access System Restore Settings
- Click the Start Menu or the Search bar on the Taskbar.
- Type “Create a restore point” and click on the result that appears (it will open the System Properties window).
- In the System Properties window, ensure you are on the System Protection tab.
Step 2: Open the System Restore Wizard
- Click the “System Restore…” button.
- The “Restore system files and settings” window will open. Click “Next”.
Step 3: Select a Restore Point
- A list of available restore points will be displayed. If you don’t see the one you want, check the “Show more restore points” box to view older ones.
- Select the restore point created before the date and time when your PC started experiencing problems.
- Tip: Look for the restore point marked as “System” (created automatically) or one you named yourself.
- Crucial Step (Optional but Recommended): Click the “Scan for affected programs” button. This will show you which programs and drivers will be removed (because they were installed after that restore point) and which might be restored (because they were removed after that point). This helps you know what you may need to reinstall later.
- Once you have selected the correct restore point, click “Next”.
Step 4: Confirm and Execute the Restore
- Review the selected restore point and make sure it is the one you want.
- Click “Finish” to start the process.⚠️ Warning: System Restore cannot be interrupted once it begins. Your PC will restart, and it may take some time (up to an hour or more, depending on your system and the size of the changes).
- Windows will now restart and begin the restoration process.
- Once complete, your computer will boot back into Windows 10, and a notification will appear confirming whether the restore was successful.
2️⃣ Method 2: Performing System Restore When Windows Won’t Boot
If your computer is failing to start correctly, you can access System Restore via the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
Step 1: Enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
If your PC fails to boot Windows three times in a row, it should automatically enter the Automatic Repair screen.
- If it doesn’t, you may need to force it by turning off the computer during the boot process (when you see the Windows logo) three times in a row.
Step 2: Navigate to System Restore
- When the Automatic Repair screen appears, select “Advanced options”.
- On the Choose an option screen, click “Troubleshoot”.
- On the Troubleshoot screen, click “Advanced options”.
- Finally, select “System Restore”.
Step 3: Complete the Restore Process
- The PC may ask you to select an administrator account and enter the password.
- The System Restore wizard will launch, just like in Method 1.
- Click “Next” and proceed to select a restore point from the list.
- Click “Next” and then “Finish” to start the restore.
Your PC will restart, apply the changes, and hopefully, boot successfully back into Windows 10.
💡 Important: Check if System Protection is Enabled
System Restore can only work if System Protection is enabled for your main drive (usually C:). If it’s disabled, your PC won’t be creating any restore points.
- Open the “Create a restore point” search result (System Properties).
- Look in the “Protection Settings” box.
- If your main drive (System) says “Off” under Protection, select the drive and click “Configure…”.
- Select “Turn on system protection” and click “Apply” and “OK”.
