Scientists showed a series of male photographs to 122 Polish women aged between 19 and 70. The participants were asked to rate each man based on physical attractiveness. The images varied in body type, facial hair, and overall build, allowing researchers to observe clear preference trends.

1. Physical Strength Appeals More to Younger Women
The study showed that women of reproductive age were more likely to prefer physically strong and muscular men. Broad shoulders and a V-shaped upper body were rated as more attractive by younger participants.
Experts believe this preference is linked to evolutionary instincts, where physical strength signals good health and the potential for strong genetic traits.
2. Beards Become More Attractive With Age
One of the most interesting findings involved facial hair. Older women consistently rated men with fuller beards as more attractive than younger women did.
Researchers suggest that beards are associated with maturity, experience, and social status, qualities that tend to gain importance later in life. For many older women, a beard symbolized confidence and emotional stability rather than physical dominance.
3. Slimmer Builds Preferred by Older Women
Unlike younger participants, older women found slimmer, less muscular men more appealing. After menopause, women were less attracted to highly muscular, V-shaped bodies and instead showed a preference for men who appeared leaner and less physically imposing.
This shift may help explain why mothers and daughters sometimes disagree strongly when it comes to male attractiveness.
Why Preferences Change Over Time
According to researchers from Wroclaw Medical University, hormonal and biological changes play a key role. As reproductive concerns fade with age, women tend to place less importance on traits linked to fertility and genetic strength.
Instead, older women prioritize social skills, emotional intelligence, and perceived stability—qualities that are harder to judge visually but may be subtly reflected in appearance.
Younger women, on the other hand, are more likely to associate physical strength with protection, health, and successful reproduction.
