Ninja Turtles and Daredevil similarities are much deeper than most fans realize. While many people know the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as fun pizza-loving heroes, the original comics were heavily inspired by Marvel’s Daredevil series, especially the darker stories written by Frank Miller.
Creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird openly paid tribute to Daredevil when creating the TMNT universe. The connection is not accidental — many important details in both stories directly mirror each other.
Fans who revisit the original 1984 TMNT comics often notice how dark, gritty, and noir-inspired the atmosphere feels. That tone came directly from the influence of Daredevil comics from the 1980s.
Both Stories Begin With a Traffic Accident
One of the biggest Ninja Turtles and Daredevil similarities appears in their origin stories.
In Daredevil’s story, young Matt Murdock saves an old man from being hit by a truck. During the accident, a container filled with radioactive chemicals crashes into Matt’s eyes. The accident blinds him, but it also enhances his remaining senses to superhuman levels.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles origin cleverly continues from that exact moment.
According to TMNT lore, the same radioactive container that hits Matt Murdock bounces away and later crashes into a fish tank carried by a young boy. The chemicals spill onto four turtles living in the sewer, causing them to mutate into intelligent humanoid fighters.
This subtle reference was a direct homage by Eastman and Laird to Daredevil’s classic origin.
The Masters: Stick and Splinter
Another obvious connection involves the mentors who train the heroes.
Daredevil is trained by a blind martial arts master named Stick. Meanwhile, the Ninja Turtles are raised and trained by Splinter, whose name also refers to a small piece of wood — very similar to a stick.
Both characters are elderly, wise martial arts experts who guide their students through discipline, combat training, and spiritual growth.
The naming choice was clearly intentional and remains one of the most interesting hidden references in comic book history.
The Hand vs. The Foot
The enemy organizations in both universes also share a direct connection.
In Marvel comics, Daredevil fights against a deadly ninja clan known as The Hand. The TMNT creators parodied this idea by naming Shredder’s organization The Foot.
Instead of copying the name completely, they flipped the body part from hand to foot as a playful reference.
Even the structure of both organizations feels similar. They are secretive ninja groups operating in the shadows of New York City and heavily involved in organized crime and assassination.
Dark New York Atmosphere
Another one of the strongest Ninja Turtles and Daredevil similarities is the setting.
Both stories take place in dark and dangerous areas of New York City filled with crime, corruption, underground networks, and grim alleyways. Daredevil is strongly associated with Hell’s Kitchen, while the original TMNT comics focus on similar gritty urban environments.
Many fans who only know the colorful cartoon versions of the Ninja Turtles are surprised when they discover how dark the original comics actually were.
The first TMNT comics were printed in black and white and featured violent fights, serious themes, and noir-style storytelling heavily inspired by Frank Miller’s work on Daredevil.
Elektra and Karai
There is also an interesting similarity between female characters in both universes.
One of the most important people in Daredevil’s life is Elektra, a deadly assassin who constantly shifts between ally and enemy. In the TMNT universe, Karai serves a very similar role.

Over time, TMNT evolved into its own massive franchise with cartoons, movies, toys, and video games, but the DNA of Daredevil still exists within its foundations.
